White people are always like, ‘Come on! It wasn’t us!’ Like they want black people to forget everything. Like every year, white people add 100 years to how long ago slavery was. I’ve heard educated white people say ‘Slavery was 400 years ago!’ No it very wasn’t. It was 140 years ago. That’s two 70 year old ladies living and dying back to back. That’s how recently you could buy a guy. And it’s not like slavery ended and then everything has been amazing. Like it just ended like a clean shit where you don’t even have to wipe… just boom. And it’s just been parades and presents ever since. […] And by the way, white people have our own thing; stuff we went though that hurt us that we have to cope with—like when they took our slaves away! That was really hard for us… so it’s pretty even.

I can’t decide if I hate him or really like him.

I just read your last post and wanted to give you a heads up in private that "cotton pickin'" is actually considered to be a racist/borderline racist term. Obviously not calling you out due to the nature of the post. I'm glad you're away now.

Sorry about that! Deleted :). I don’t mind call outs. You’re not telling me I’m a terrible person, you’re saying that I’ve internalized horrible bits of our culture. I would be a terrible person if I didn’t want to learn.

And thank you, I’m glad I’m out too.

Donald Glover talking about the comments he received during his campaign to be the next Spider-Man (x)

“I was talking about it with Dan Eckman, who directed my Bonfire video. Can you imagine that trailer? That would be dope. Like it makes sense… a poor black kid in Queens. Like it just fits.”

Spider Man isn’t Spider Man because he’s white, he’s spider man because he’s a nerd. And there are TOTALLY people of color who are nerdy. Even though it’s a racist subculture.

why no mlk quotes

Anonymous

Okay, so I’m going to get out my soap box. I’ll put a convenient little tl;dr if you don’t want to read the entire glorious rant.

So! Queer people have a long and involved history of appropriating the movement and history of the African American civil rights movement (gay is NOT the new black), which is disgusting for a large number of reasons.

Reason the first! Racism still happens. Gay isn’t the new black, because that implies that there is no racism. And news flash! There is! So many examples I don’t have time to list them, but persecution rates and poverty rates follow color lines pretty strictly. Ask Google or watch the news for more details.

Reason the second! Cultural appropriation is bad. Here’s the thing, if we’re going to be racist shit heads, white folks don’t get to use MLK quotes for their own purposes. Cause that’s their history, their culture, their accomplishment. Whiteness doesn’t get to be the reason that MLK was shot, that the civil rights movement needed to happen, and be responsible for the racism that still happens today and then try to repurpose the accomplishments of people of color for their own goals.

Reason the third! The gay marriage movement is a movement designed for cis white gay rich men. It doesn’t really do a whole lot for youth that get bullied, for homeless trans* youth, for the fact that trans women of color make up 24% of the hate crimes against queer people, for homeless youth, for the insanely high trans* attempted suicide rate, the lack of health care coverage for trans* people, and the list goes on and on. If you’re going to use MLK quotes, then you should at least use them to help the people he was trying to help, namely poor people of color.

tl;dr It’s racist.

Daughter Of The Stars: To the people complaining about the “whiteness” in Tamora Pierce’s...

maidoflight:

To the people complaining about the “whiteness” in Tamora Pierce’s Tortall books… Please just stop.

No matter what you’re opinion on the matter (and on a few accounts I agree with you), you have to give the woman a break!

No one is perfect, and Tamora Pierce has covered so many more issues with such care and good taste. Like her portrayal of non-stereotypical LGBT members of society even if they are few in number. And of course her HUGE feminist ideals throughout the book.

As for your issues with her portrayal of Thayet…. You have to remember that she was introduced in the first series of books Mrs. Pierce had written. It was the 80’s, it was a miracle that she had some of the ideals she portrayed in those books.

As her writing has progressed, so have her ideals and the portrayal of such in her books. I know it may not be quite what you want…

But there are many major and minor characters who are POC and who are NOT portrayed as a villain. Off the top of my head I can think of Nawat, Buri, Numair, Sarge, Quasim, not to mention all of the good characters from the Copper Isles and the Bazhir tribes.

And finally, as for the Shang Warriors, while at it’s founding it was probably mostly of one place of origin or another… But at this point in history (in the books), the Shang Warriors will take any child who shows promise. No matter their sex or heritage.

So try not to be so mad about it. She can only do so much.

Critiques are still valid.

Something to keep in mind is that usually people who take time to critique something love it and want to be better. And that they want to see themselves reflected more in whatever the work IS.

Not to mention the critiques of Whiteness in Tamora Pierce aren’t just a critique of Whiteness in Tamora Pierce, it’s a critique of Whiteness in general. People aren’t unhappy solely with her books, they’re unhappy with racism and underrepresentation EVERYWHERE.

Did you know?

White American males constitute only 33% of the population. Yet, they occupy approximately:

  • 80% of tenured positions in higher education
  • 80% of the House of Representatives
  • 80-85% of the U.S. Senate
  • 92%of Forbes 400 executive CEO-level positions
  • 90% of athletic team owners
  • 97.7% of U.S. presidents

I wonder what the statistics for gender non-conforming persons are, being forced or emotionally driven to abandon their lifestyle because of society.

I unfortunately, belong to that.

The national survey on transgender discrimination includes gender non-conforming individuals. They’re not separated, but it is an interesting question.

i don’t like that they didn’t distinguish between trans* people of color / white trans* people and dfab trans* people / dmab trans* people.  cuz i doubt a white dfab trans* person is in as much danger of, like, being murdered as a dmab trans* poc.

i mean, it’s great to talk about this shit, but can we not erase the parts transmisogyny and racism play?

Whoever made the graphics didn’t include those statistics. However, if you’re interested in the part that racism plays here is:

The survey on Black respondents:

http://www.thetaskforce.org/reports_and_research/ntds_black_respondents

The survey on Latin@ respondents:

http://www.thetaskforce.org/reports_and_research/ntds_latino_a_respondents

The survey on Asian/Pacific Islander respondents:

http://www.thetaskforce.org/reports_and_research/ntds_asianamerican_respondents

And the survey on American Indian/Alaska native respondents:

http://www.thetaskforce.org/reports_and_research/ntds_nativeamerican_respondents

And you’re right that a DFAB white person is at less risk for being murdered than a DMAB person of color. They’re also less likely to live in poverty.

OK, Time To Break It Down

  • When someone says "racist", what they mean is: There is a systematic, entrenched, system which treats white people as advantaged and privileged and people who are not white as inferior and disadvantaged. This means that although some progress has been made toward equalization of all races, we are still far from true equal footing for all people of all races. What is needed to help with this equalization is for you to realize that the privilege and advantage is still there, whether you mean to benefit from it or not. What is needed to help with this equalization is for you to realize that PoC need safe spaces. What is needed to help with this equalization is for you to help push for PoC history to be in schools. For the teachers to stop writing PoC students off as "going to amount to nothing". For the authorities to stop treating PoC as ten times more dangerous and criminal than white people when we're not.
  • What some white people hear "racist" what they hear is: You are a bad person. You are an evil person. You are a Klan member wannabe, even if you don't wear the white hood. You burn crosses on lawns. You use the N word even though you know black people don't like it. You would be like the ones who make the news, dragging PoC behind their vehicles, shooting them for looking "suspicious" and beating them up for fun if you thought you could get away with it. You would back up returning to slavery and segregation! You hate all people who are not white!
  • Why non-PoC want to be able to say the N word: They think it's just a mean, unkind, rude, unpleasant word. That's all. Nothing more. Sticks and stones. No different than honky or cracker.
  • Why the N word offends many PoC: It is not just a rude word like "dummy" or "stupid" or "asshole". It is a word that was used, for the duration of slavery and beyond, to keep PoC oppressed, and to remind them that if they stood up for themselves they would be whipped, beaten, attacked, mutilated, and KILLED. Let me repeat: KILLED. We fought hard for the right to be treated like HUMAN BEINGS. The N word is an indication that there are still many white people out there who don't think of us as HUMAN BEINGS and don't want us to be treated like HUMAN BEINGS. So it's not just "black people are being mean and not letting us say it." Cracker, by the way, does not mean little thing with salt on it that you put cheese on. It means the one who cracked the whip while PoC were slaves.
  • So think about these things before you start getting defensive at PoC. And think about why you're getting defensive. Think about why you want to deny the truth of other people's experiences when you have no way of having that experience yourself.
  • Why do you want to be able to say a word that is sending the message to PoC that you want them to be as they were during slavery and segregation times. If you don't want to send that message. If you don't sincerely feel that way, then there is no valid reason -- NONE -- to want to use the word.

Musings of a Pornographic Connoisseur: quiltingqueer: starwaveimpulse: I’m really sick of Tumblr’s so called...

quiltingqueer:

starwaveimpulse:

I’m really sick of Tumblr’s so called social justice. Telling someone to “check their privilege” because they’re either male, white, middle-class, straight or whatever the hell else is so fucking ignorant. You never know what other people may be going…

Telling someone to check their privilege isn’t based soley on them being white, cis, straight, or male. Telling someone to check their privilege is something that is done when people have done something that abuses that privilege.

And I don’t know if this is something you have experienced, but  able bodied, straight, white, cis men are the least likely to understand what people of minorities go through. It isn’t necessarily their fault per say, but because they have never had to face what people of minorities face, they don’t understand it. They don’t know what it means to live with a disability, they don’t know what it’s like to get misgendered every day, they don’t know what it’s like to hold hands with their significant other in public and get jeered at, they don’t know what it’s like to be terrified that they will be raped everywhere they go. They don’t face living as a person of color and feeling an irrational terror every time they see a police officer, feeling stupid every time they go to school, having strange people ask to touch their hair, and on and on and on.

White, straight, able bodied, cis men can find people like them on television. They can go out and find dolls and action figures and other merchandise with whie, able bodied, cis men plastered all over it.

There is SO MUCH that goes along with NOT being a minority, and one of the greatest privileges is to get indignant every time someone tells you that you have privilege.
