DEAR PAST SELF

why didn’t you tag your posts?

Why didn’t you make a more concerted effort in order to get the pictures of you playing mini golf in your chair?

those were cool.

it’s okay to be disabled, it’s okay to have a broken body, it’s okay to live with what you’ve got

OH GOD SOMETHING I SAID WAS TURNED INTO A QUOTE BY SOMEONE OTHER THAN ME LOOK MY FACE IT’S BROKEN.

sasha-smithy:

Okay so I saw this yesterday before I left for work and I asked a friend if he wanted to hear a lame joke. He did so I told him that one.

ACCEPTABLE USE OF THE WORD LAME.

I really wish people wouldn’t overreact when I’m behind them in my wheelchair.

Seriously.
They’ll look, see me behind them, then suddenly practically dodge out of the way as if I’m going to hit them. And one lady just stopped some guy just to have him move out from in front of me.
And to think it’s only going to get worse when I get a walker/rollator.

file this under “annoying things about mobility aids”

People usually scatter in front of me… but that’s because I’m going really, really fast and making lots of noise. I’m a total DICK when I’m in my wheelchair because I can get away with it. People will apologize to me FOR ME GETTING IN THEIR WAY. It’s… Kind of awesome. Except when people are blocking the whole aisle, and I’m like… SPEED UP I HAVE IMPORTANT CRIPPLE ERRANDS TO RUN MOVE YOUR SORRY ASSES and my poor friends are jogging and panting behind me and I’m just like WHEEEEEEEEE I LOVE TILE FLOORS.

Ok this is a big one. Important to me. I have this friend. Said friend was the biggest damn gamer you ever met. (not phyiscally big, but he loved the games.) MMO, strat, casual, any genre.

Then he had a stroke. A young man’s ‘blowout’ stroke, the kind that leaves him a great lack of control for one side of his body.

This is not a plea for financial assistance, though he was the primary income source, his friends and family have dealt with these issues. He’s gotten through the roughest times but he is now effectively disabled. He can’t type or mouse with his bad arm (which was his primary) The one player controllers we’ve tried are simply not very good, or at least he can’t adjust to them. He also lacks a certain amount of mental agility, though that’s more from disuse than actual damage from the stroke. He does get by, he’s got one of those 9 button ubermice that he uses better than I ever would, but still.

While we’ve been heading over and playing a variety of board games on a regular basis, some of our schedules don’t lend us a lot of time to do that, and aside from his son, no-one else is really the board gaming type. And most board games are better with 3 or more players anyway. Plus his son is getting ready to start job hunting and such.

What I’m trying to find are ‘casual’ games which are:

Mainly PC base, though he does have an android based tablet as well.

Lacking in time pressure mechanics.

Give some sort of ability to save progress/etc, because he finds sitting in one spot for more than an half an hour or so can cause pain (it’s due to nerve receptor damage from the stroke).

And at least initially, of fairly low complexity.

I’m thinking old Civ, Original Sim City, a few other types of games like that but with a more modern ascetic (just for example). He owns a very modern machine (i7, mid-enthusiest range card, ssd, big ram), given to him after on top of everything else a fire destroyed his house this year.

Something that allows co-op or multiplayer over the net as an option would be excellent. I am NOT looking for f2p2win games… his finances are fairly fixed and he doesn’t need something that will punish him for not spending money.

Signal boost!!

Neverwinter Nights 2. No seriously, pause as often as you like to give orders, save as often as you like in any number of slots. Nice plot, older game so it’ll work. Lots of places to play online, although the pausing is less versatile. There’s also going to be a Neverwinter MMO this January. So there’s that.

STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND WATCH THIS.

I started bawling when he started running holy crap

I’m showing this to my dad. If this guy can do it, my dad can, too!

oh god inspiration porn and thinspiration all in one! YAY :P.

Because the truth of the matter is that sometimes you can’t keep pushing to get what you want. Sometimes you’re stuck with a body that will fight you every step of the way no matter what you do.

It’s way less harmful in the long run to accept your broken body and learn new ways of doing things, especially with things like fibromyalgia.

Just like determination is important, so is acceptance.

God grant me the courage to change the things I can, the serenity to accept the things I can’t, and the wisdom to know the difference.

And there aren’t many places in our society where we’re told, it’s okay to be disabled, it’s okay to have a broken body, it’s okay to live with what you’ve got, but it’s an important thing to hear, because it’s true. Not everyone can work their way out of disability, and the people who won’t deserve to know that they are not lesser for staring their disability in the face and saying, okay, and relearning how to live life.

Thank you for the excellent commentary, quiltingqueer. That is exactly what I wanted to say to this video too. This video makes me so angry I want to hit something.

Attitudes like this make it harder for people to believe that you know your body and it is broken.

Attitudes like this are why people in my life and even random people in the supermarket ask me if I’ve tried PT.

Attitudes like this make it even harder to accept my broken body and accept that I’ve done everything I can to make it function the best way it can.

Attitudes like this make me feel guilty and lazy, even though I know that I cannot push my body this way.

Fuck inspiration porn.

Not disabled, but enabled (if I’ve posted this before forgive me)

I choose my chair. Also, still disabled by society and stuff, but the picture is cute.

sometimes i think that instead of being the doctor’s companion i’d like to just sit around the tardis and offer hugs when he needs them because let’s face it the doctor needs a lot of hugs and i can’t run to save my life

You know what I want? The doctor to have a wheelchair bound companion.

BUT MIKE YOU SAY, surely there is too much running!

Piffle I say! The doctor can steal some Dalek armor to rig up a sweet set of wheels, that levitate up stairs and can help break falls and store a picnic lunch to boot.

I hate when people try to tell me that either “Your illness isn’t your life” or “You shouldn’t let your illness get to you like this”. I don’t think people realize the accommodations I have to make for myself, & the amount of compromises I’ve had to make in the past, as a result of this illness, its symptoms, & how it has made me feel. Even if I’m better on some days, I am NEVER completely well. And it’s exhausting trying to remind everyone that sometimes.
